SHILLONG : In a major enforcement drive under Operation Safer Shillong, the Shillong Traffic Police booked 80 traffic violations and collected Rs 81,500 in fines during a coordinated night checking operation conducted across the city on Friday night.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the multi-point naka checking was carried out jointly by Shillong Traffic Police personnel, the Special Operation Team (SOT), and members of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar.
The operation focused on curbing drunken driving, illegal vehicle modifications, and other traffic offences as part of the police’s ongoing mission to improve road safety in Shillong.
SP Syiem said motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol were immediately stopped from continuing their journey. They were only allowed to leave after a responsible family member or acquaintance arrived to safely take them home.
He stated that the weekend enforcement drive is part of the broader Operation Safer Shillong, which aims to reduce traffic violations, prevent road accidents, and encourage responsible driving through strict implementation of traffic rules.
The Superintendent of Police further informed that similar weekend checking drives will continue regularly across Shillong as authorities work towards achieving the goal of making the city a “Zero Road Fatality City.”
Shillong Traffic Police has urged all motorists to follow traffic regulations, avoid drunk driving, and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure safer roads for everyone.
