SHILLONG : Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai on Saturday inspected the progress of two major infrastructure and cultural development projects in his South Shillong constituency — the link road connecting the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly area in Laban to Umshyrpi and the Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Complex.
The link road project, sanctioned at over ₹6 crore, is aimed at easing traffic congestion in Shillong city by providing an alternative route between Laban and Umshyrpi. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and reduce pressure on existing roads.
The Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Complex, sanctioned at ₹13.58 crore, is being developed as a major cultural hub and will include a museum, amphitheatre, guest house, restaurants, and a children’s park.
Speaking to media persons during the inspection, Shullai said he had personally met the Union Defence Minister to obtain the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) for land use related to the construction of the link road.
“I had personally met the Union Defence Minister to get the NOC for the land use required for the construction of the link road,” Shullai said.
He further stated that the Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Complex project was initiated by him in 2021 and that he had taken up the proposal with the then Union Minister in-charge of Arts and Culture, following which the project was sanctioned.
Shullai also informed that he recently met the incumbent Union Minister for Arts and Culture, who assured him that the second installment of funds for the project would be released soon.
“The Union Minister has assured that the second installment of funds for the Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Complex will be released shortly,” he added.
