SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Government has assured that it remains open to dialogue with the Green Tech Foundation (GTF), which is currently staging a hunger strike in protest against the proposed Taj Resort project at Umiam Lake’s Lumpongdeng Island.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the government is willing to engage with the protesters and provide further clarification on the project. He emphasized that there is no need to formally invite the group, as “the door of the government is always open” for discussions.
Addressing growing concerns, Tynsong reiterated that the government is fully committed to environmental protection while simultaneously promoting tourism in the state. He clarified that no permanent structures will be allowed on Lumpongdeng Island, countering allegations raised by the GTF.
The Green Tech Foundation has been demanding the scrapping of the proposed five-star Taj Resort and spa, arguing that the project could damage the fragile ecosystem of the island and benefit only a select few.
However, the Deputy Chief Minister assured that the government’s vision is to enhance, not harm, the natural beauty of the island. He said that development plans include planting more trees and replicating beautification initiatives similar to those implemented at Ward’s Lake, aiming to transform Lumpongdeng into a premier tourist destination.
Highlighting the economic benefits, Tynsong noted that the project is intended to boost tourism and generate employment opportunities for local youth. He pointed out that nearly 75% of employees in hospitality establishments like Courtyard by Marriott Shillong and Vivanta Meghalaya Shillong are locals trained in the hospitality sector.
He further stressed that many young people from Meghalaya pursue hotel management studies outside the state, and such projects would help create job opportunities within Meghalaya itself.
Responding to criticism over investment motives, Tynsong dismissed allegations of personal gain, asserting that infrastructure projects are aimed at benefiting future generations and instilling pride among the people of the state.
When asked whether the protest was politically motivated, he refrained from commenting, stating that it is up to the public to judge, while his responsibility remains to present the government’s position clearly.
