SHILLONG : The recent government announcement to make Vehicle Tracking Devices (VTDs) mandatory in all commercial taxis operating within Meghalaya has triggered strong dissatisfaction among taxi drivers’ unions across the state.
In response, representatives of the East Khasi Hills Taxi Welfare Association, led by its president Bah Wandonbok Jyrwa, along with the All Jaintia Commercial Vehicles Association, under the leadership of Bah Paila K Lyngkot, met Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Bah Sniawbhalang Dhar on February 4. The meeting also included discussions with the State Transport Department.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bah Wandonbok Jyrwa said that the discussions were held in a positive atmosphere. He informed that the state government has agreed to temporarily restrict the installation of Vehicle Tracking Devices only to commercial taxis operating within Meghalaya.
He further added that the installation of tracking devices in vehicles operating outside the state would be taken up later for further discussion, and a final decision would be made only after consultations on whether such installations are necessary.
The taxi unions stated that while they are not opposed to safety measures, any policy affecting their livelihood must be implemented with proper consultation, clarity, and consent.
