SHILLONG : Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Monday announced that Tura Medical College is set to begin operations from the next academic session, with the process of recruiting faculty members already underway.
Speaking to reporters, Shylla said the government is confident of starting classes as planned if the recruitment process progresses smoothly.
“We have already started recruiting faculty members, and if everything goes well, classes at Tura Medical College will commence in the next academic session,” the Health Minister stated.
He further informed that the medical college, which was initially proposed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, will now be established as a fully government-run institution.
According to Shylla, the decision to scrap the PPP model was taken after concerns were raised by stakeholders and residents of the Garo Hills region, who demanded direct government management of the institution.
“We have done away with the PPP mode and are now proceeding with Tura Medical College as a government college,” he added.
The establishment of Tura Medical College is expected to significantly strengthen medical education and healthcare services in West Garo Hills and the wider Garo Hills region.
