SHILLONG : The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has expressed confidence in retaining the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming bye-election, with party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit stating that the candidate will be finalised soon.
“We are yet to decide (on the candidate), but that will be placed very soon. It is not that we boast or something like that, but we understand the pulse of the people that we are going to keep this constituency with us,” Basaiawmoit said on Friday.
“We Don’t Need Outsiders”
Responding to speculation about potential candidates, the VPP chief asserted that the party has capable leaders within its own ranks and does not require support from outside the organisation to contest the election.
“I am telling you, we have enough people in the party who are qualified, who understand the background, the origin of the party. I don’t think we need people from outside the party to contest this election,” he said.
Bye-Election After MP’s Demise
The bye-election has been necessitated following the sudden demise of Shillong MP, Ricky AJ Syngkon, on February 19.
With political activities expected to intensify in the coming weeks, all eyes are now on VPP’s official announcement of its candidate for the prestigious Shillong parliamentary seat.
