SHILLONG : The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has officially recommended the name of its spokesperson, Dr Batskhem Myrboh, as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.
The by-election has been necessitated following the untimely demise of sitting Shillong Member of Parliament, Dr Ricky A J Syngkon, who passed away on February 19, 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, VPP spokesperson Dr A W Rani informed that the party’s Election Committee submitted its recommendation on March 2, 2026, to the State Executive Committee for approval.
“The Election Committee has today, the 2nd March, 2026, submitted its recommendation to the State Executive Committee for approval, proposing the name of Dr Batskhem Myrboh as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha by-election from the 1-Shillong Parliamentary Constituency, necessitated by the untimely demise of the sitting Member of Parliament, Dr Ricky A J Syngkon, who passed away on 19th February 2026,” the statement read.
The recommendation will now be placed before the State Executive Committee for final clearance.
Earlier, on February 27, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit had expressed confidence that the party would retain the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming by-poll.
“We are yet to decide (on the candidate), but that will be placed very soon. It is not that we boast, but we understand the pulse of the people and we are confident that we will keep this constituency with us,” Basaiawmoit had stated.
The by-election for the 1-Shillong Parliamentary Constituency is expected to witness keen political interest across the state.
