SHILLONG : Chairman of the Meghalaya State Health Advisory Board (MSHAB) and Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem has expressed serious concern over recurring natural calamities in Meghalaya and called for faster disbursement of compensation to affected victims.Speaking to the media after submitting a memorandum to Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Syiem stressed the urgent need to strengthen disaster response systems and ensure timely financial assistance reaches affected families and farmers.“As an MLA, I am deeply concerned about the increasing incidents of natural calamities across different parts of the state,” he said, while thanking the minister for his positive response. He also assured that he would continue to follow up the matter to ensure prompt compensation.The legislator emphasized the importance of pre-emptive planning, urging the government to allocate and park sufficient funds at the district level ahead of the peak calamity season, particularly during March and April.“We will follow up this matter to ensure speedy compensation and also to park maximum funds at the district level before the calamity season, so that disaster management authorities are better prepared to respond,” he added.Highlighting the extent of damage, Syiem revealed that in Ri Bhoi district alone, at least 243 houses were damaged due to recent calamities.He further called on authorities to strengthen disaster management mechanisms to minimize losses and improve response efficiency in future incidents.The MLA was accompanied by headmen from around 20 villages in the district during the submission of the memorandum.
