SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday assured that the government will issue a white paper on the Lumpongdeng issue, even as he reiterated that no construction is planned on the island and appealed to the Green Tech Foundation (GTF) chairman to end his ongoing hunger strike.
Responding to queries on whether the government would officially clarify the matter, Sangma said, “Sure, no problem, we will give that,” referring to the demand for a white paper.
On the health condition of the protester, the Chief Minister stated that medical teams have been deployed at the protest site and are closely monitoring the situation. He informed that necessary medical attention is being provided despite the protester refusing to be shifted to a hospital.
“We have asked the medical department to provide support. We have been monitoring since last evening and medical attention has been given,” he said.
Sangma further added that while the authorities have repeatedly requested the protester to seek hospital care, the decision to remain at the protest site has been respected. However, doctors and medical personnel have been stationed at the location to ensure continuous care.
Reiterating the government’s stand, the Chief Minister clarified that the proposed tourism project is not located on Lumpongdeng Island. According to him, the construction of the Taj Resort & Spa will take place at the existing Orchid Hotel premises at Umiam.
“We have made it clear that there is no construction on Lumpongdeng Island. The project will be at the Orchid Hotel site in Umiam,” he stated.
Sangma also said that the concerns raised by the protestors have already been addressed, and therefore there is no justification for continuing the hunger strike.
“The main issue has been clarified and people are satisfied. There is no reason to continue the protest,” he added, while expressing concern over the health of those involved.
Highlighting the broader tourism vision, Sangma revealed that the Taj Group is set to invest over ₹300 crore in the project, which he described as one of the best in the region.
He further noted that the government is planning a large-scale tourism push, including multiple five-star hotel projects and the development of around 3,000 homestays aimed at benefiting local families.
“Tourism must be viewed holistically. These investments will create jobs and boost the economy,” he said.
