SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday assured that the state government is taking aggressive steps to complete the remaining border fencing along the international border with Bangladesh.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said the Government of India is also closely following up on the issue to ensure timely completion of the project.
“We are moving very aggressively on that and I hope that things should be completed soon,” the Chief Minister said.
He informed that out of the total 440-kilometre-long international border, approximately 40 kilometres of fencing is still pending. Sangma pointed out that factors such as population-related issues, land acquisition challenges, and ongoing court cases have slowed down the fencing work.
“We are taking the necessary steps. I expect that very soon the remaining stretches will be completed. Some of the delays are due to court cases, especially in the West Jaintia Hills section, which is the largest unfenced stretch,” he added.
Emphasizing the state’s alertness along the international border, Sangma said that Meghalaya remains vigilant in coordination with central agencies.
“The government of Meghalaya, the BSF and all concerned agencies are very alert,” the Chief Minister said.
He further revealed that a high-level review meeting was held on December 24, 2025, involving multiple agencies, including the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB), to assess and strengthen border security measures.
