Shillong : Meghalaya’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested two alleged drug traffickers and seized suspected heroin during an intelligence-led operation in Shillong’s Lumsurvey area on Monday.
According to officials, the ANTF launched an ambush operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding a suspected drug transaction in the locality. During the operation, officers intercepted two individuals and conducted a search under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The search resulted in the recovery of 16.1 grams of suspected heroin concealed inside a plastic soap box, along with 47 colourful vials suspected to contain heroin. A mobile phone was also seized as part of the investigation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sabina Begum (21), a resident of Lumsurvey with a permanent address at 5th Mile, Samdhara, Tezpur, Assam, and Viru Singh (40) of Punjabi Line, Bara Bazar, Shillong.
A case has been registered at Sadar Police Station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar stated that investigators suspect the accused may have links to a larger narcotics network operating in Shillong. He said further investigations are underway to establish both forward and backward linkages connected to the drug trade.
The Lumsurvey area has remained under the ANTF’s watch due to recurring drug-related activities. Official records indicate that three NDPS cases have already been registered from the locality in 2026, leading to seven arrests. Authorities noted that many of those arrested in previous cases were reportedly from Assam.
Earlier operations in the area have also led to the seizure of heroin, empty vials, and syringes.
Police reiterated that strict surveillance is being maintained in Lumsurvey and warned that stringent action will continue against individuals involved in drug trafficking and narcotics-related offences across Meghalaya.
