SHILLONG : The chairman of the Green Tech Foundation (GTF), H. Bansiewdor Nonglang, has refused to be shifted to hospital despite repeated appeals from the district administration and medical authorities, as his hunger strike entered a critical phase.
Nonglang stated that he would only agree to end his protest if the government fulfils two key demands — scrapping the proposed tourism project on Lumpongdeng Island and withdrawing the FIR filed against leaders of the organisation.
Speaking to reporters, Nonglang said, “We have two demands: call off the project on Lumpongdeng Island and withdraw the FIR filed against us. If that is done, we will voluntarily go to the hospital and return home.”
He further urged the authorities not to take any coercive steps, asserting that he remains conscious and firm in his decision. “If these demands are not met, I request the district administration not to forcefully shift me to the hospital. I am still in my senses,” he added.
Highlighting the purpose of his agitation, Nonglang maintained that the protest is aimed at safeguarding local ownership of Lumpongdeng Island. He reiterated that his stand is to ensure that the indigenous people retain rightful control over the area.
“From day one, I have not forced anyone. I have taken this decision to ensure that local people remain the rightful owners of Lumpongdeng Island,” he said.
In a strong statement, Nonglang declared that he would rather sacrifice his life than allow outsiders to take over the island.
Meanwhile, the state government has reiterated its position, stating that no permanent structures will be constructed on Lumpongdeng Island. It also clarified that the proposed Taj Resort & Spa project will be developed at the existing Orchid Hotel premises at Umiam.
