SHILLONG : The Meghalaya government will introduce a resolution in the State Assembly opposing uranium mining in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Thursday, reaffirming the government’s firm stand against any such project.
In a video statement, Sangma said the issue was discussed in detail with senior leaders of the National People’s Party (NPP), who unanimously recommended that the Assembly adopt a resolution formally opposing uranium mining in Meghalaya.
Accepting the recommendation, the Chief Minister said the government will work towards passing the resolution to clearly establish the state’s position.
Sangma stressed that the decision is driven by concerns over the potential impact of uranium mining on people, forests, the environment and the future of Meghalaya.
“There are too many risks involved. We are aware of the implications it could have on our people, our environment, our forests and the future of our state. Hence, we are very firm that we will oppose uranium mining,” he said.
Referring to the Centre’s position, the Chief Minister cited recent remarks by Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, who stated during his visit to Shillong that the Government of India has not yet taken any decision on uranium mining in Meghalaya and is still examining the matter.
The proposed Assembly resolution, Sangma said, will reaffirm the Meghalaya government’s commitment to protecting the state from uranium mining and its possible environmental and social consequences.
