The Meghalaya Government is considering the inclusion of provisions similar to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) under the proposed Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, said on Tuesday.
Tynsong stated that the proposal has been referred to the Advocate General and legal experts for examination and legal opinion before a final decision is taken.
Responding to allegations that the government had abandoned the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, the Deputy Chief Minister clarified that the Act continues to remain in force, though its implementation is yet to be fully completed.
He informed that District Task Forces, headed by Deputy Commissioners, are actively functioning across the state to monitor and enforce the provisions of the Act.
Tynsong further explained that the earlier version of the MRSSA did not contain specific provisions for establishing entry and exit points. Consequently, an Amendment Bill has been sent to the Union Home Ministry to strengthen the legislation and address these gaps.
