SHILLONG, DEC 15: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the State Government to make the Ratacherra weighbridge in East Jaintia Hills district operational within eight weeks, after noting that it has remained non-functional since September 2024.
The direction was issued after the court examined an affidavit filed by the state respondents, which confirmed the prolonged shutdown of the weighbridge.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice H.S. Thangkhiew ordered the Transport Department to complete all necessary procedures to ensure the weighbridge becomes functional within the stipulated time.
“We direct the Transport Department to complete the entire process for making the said weighbridge functional positively within eight weeks from today,” the bench stated in its order passed on Monday.
Court Flags Discrepancies in Government Reports
The High Court also expressed serious concern over inconsistencies in reports submitted by the State Government regarding the status of weighbridges across Meghalaya.
It was noted that a report filed by the Transport Commissioner on May 8, 2025, was later found to be factually incorrect, prompting the court to caution the government against submitting inaccurate information.
“The State should be careful in filing reports and disclosing the steps taken with regard to functioning of the weighbridges, as well as repair or construction of regular weighbridges,” the court observed.
Next Hearing on March 2, 2026
The matter has been adjourned till March 2, 2026, with the High Court directing the State Government to submit a detailed progress report on the revival of the Ratacherra weighbridge before the next date of hearing.
