SHILLONG : Meghalaya is preparing to implement the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2025 within this year, Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has said.
Dhar informed that the state government is currently working on the operational framework of the policy and that detailed information will be made public once all preparations are completed.
The proposed policy aims to phase out old, unfit and highly polluting vehicles from Meghalaya’s roads. The initiative is expected to improve road safety, ease traffic movement and contribute to environmental protection by reducing vehicular pollution.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, the government is in the process of finalising various aspects of the policy before its official rollout.
Officials from the Transport Department said the state is also working on the necessary infrastructure, including authorised vehicle scrapping facilities, operational guidelines and other required systems to ensure smooth implementation of the policy.
Once implemented, the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2025 will establish a framework for identifying and disposing of end-of-life vehicles in accordance with national guidelines.
The government expects the policy to play a key role in promoting cleaner transportation and improving environmental sustainability across the state.
