SHILLONG : United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Paul Lyngdoh has made it clear that he will not contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, which was necessitated following the death of sitting MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon on February 19.
Speaking to reporters, the West Shillong MLA said his priority remains addressing challenges within Meghalaya rather than entering national politics at this stage.
Lyngdoh stated that there is still much work to be done within the state and that his focus remains on strengthening governance and leadership in Meghalaya.
According to him, there is currently a noticeable gap in capable leadership within the state, and he believes his role is to continue contributing at the state level.
He also emphasised his intention to complete the current term of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which has recently crossed the halfway mark.
Lyngdoh said he wants to ensure that he finishes the present term to the satisfaction of the people of West Shillong as well as the wider public of the state.
When asked whether he would reconsider if the UDP leadership requests him to contest the parliamentary seat, Lyngdoh said he would politely decline such a proposal.
Meanwhile, on the upcoming GHADC elections, the UDP leader said the party has not yet taken any decision regarding its strategy.
He explained that the party leadership has not met to discuss the matter yet, and therefore no official stand has been finalised.
Lyngdoh added that he has been largely occupied with the ongoing budget session and his responsibilities related to the Social Welfare Department.
