SHILLONG : Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday clarified that the proposed Taj Resort and Spa will be developed within the existing Orchid Umiam property, assuring that there is no threat to Lumpongdeng Island.
Addressing concerns over development in the Umiam area, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government’s tourism strategy is holistic, focusing not only on high-end infrastructure but also on ensuring benefits reach local communities.
“The tourism strategy is a holistic strategy. This requires infrastructure, hotels, and five-star properties, but at the same time we must ensure our people benefit. Homestays need to be promoted,” Sangma said.
On the issue of Lumpongdeng Island, he made it clear that no permanent structures will be allowed as per the agreement. The island will only be used for activities involving temporary setups.
Highlighting inclusivity in development, Sangma stated that while luxury resorts are important, equal emphasis is being placed on small restaurants and homestays so that local residents can earn from tourism.
He further noted that Meghalaya currently has around 800 homestays, with a target of adding 3,000 more in the coming years under one of the most aggressive homestay programmes in the region.
Reassuring citizens, the Chief Minister said the government is committed to maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental protection, while ensuring both high-end tourism and local participation grow together.
