Shillong/Nongpoh: A two-day exhibition showcasing Meghalaya’s traditional Ryndia silk products began at the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex in Nongpoh, Ri‑Bhoi District, with the aim of promoting the State’s unique handloom heritage to a wider market.
The event, titled “Looms & Links,” has been organised by the office of the District Handloom Officer of Ri-Bhoi to create a platform where silk producers, weavers and buyers can interact and promote Ryndia products.
Ri-Bhoi district is well known for producing Ryndia silk, a traditional fabric of Meghalaya that recently received the Ryndia Silk GI Tag, further strengthening efforts to promote the textile globally.
The exhibition was inaugurated by F.R. Kharkongor, Principal Secretary of the Textile Department, Government of Meghalaya, in the presence of Abhilash Baranwal, Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, as the guest of honour.
Other dignitaries present included M.R. Lywait, Director of Handloom; D.P. Tariang, District Handloom Officer of Ri-Bhoi; Dr Fabian W. Marbaniang, Principal of KL Bajoria College, and renowned fashion designer Daniel Syiem, who has been instrumental in showcasing Meghalaya’s Ryndia fabric on international platforms.
The exhibition features a variety of handwoven Ryndia silk products and innovative textile designs created by local weavers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from across the district, highlighting the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of Meghalaya’s traditional weaving industry.
