SHILLONG : With the aim of creating public awareness on the importance of health and well-being and encouraging people to stay away from substance abuse, three Khasi youths from different districts of Meghalaya successfully completed an 8-day walkathon covering 290 kilometres from Tura to Shillong.
The participants have been identified as Bashaiphar Shylla from Ri-Bhoi district, Kynsoijingtip Ryntathiang from Eastern and West Khasi Hills districts, and Welkinstone Shadap from East Khasi Hills district. All three are students pursuing their studies at different academic levels.
The walkathon began on January 26, coinciding with Republic Day, and concluded in Shillong after eight days of continuous walking.
Speaking to the media, the youths said that the objective of the walkathon was to educate the public about the importance of maintaining good health and to spread awareness against drug abuse and other harmful intoxicants that negatively affect both physical and mental health.
They also shared their experiences during the journey, stating that they received tremendous support from local residents along the way. Members of the Garo community extended help by providing food, shelter, and other necessities, while residents of Khasi villages also came forward to assist them during their journey.
The youths expressed gratitude to the public for their encouragement and support, stating that such cooperation strengthened their resolve to continue promoting positive social messages.
