SHILLONG : Former West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the party’s commitment to public welfare as the key reasons behind his decision.
Rapsang was welcomed into the party by Meghalaya BJP president Rikman G Momin and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai during an induction programme attended by party leaders and workers.
Speaking after joining the BJP, Rapsang said he was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a stronger and self-reliant India and expressed his commitment to continue serving the people of Meghalaya.
“As I take this step, I am honoured to join the BJP and stand among those working towards a strong and prosperous India. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is progressing with confidence and global respect. His commitment to nation-building has inspired me to dedicate myself to public service,” Rapsang said.
The former legislator said he would focus on addressing the aspirations of the people and work sincerely for their welfare.
“I thank the BJP leadership and workers for welcoming me into this family. I will work for the progress of Meghalaya and the nation, and I seek the support and blessings of the people as I begin this new journey,” he added.
Welcoming Rapsang, BJP state president Rikman G Momin said the party would work together to strengthen its presence in West Shillong and other parts of the state.
“We welcome former MLA Mohendro Rapsang into the BJP family. We will work together to strengthen the party and expand our reach among the people,” Momin said.
On speculation regarding election tickets, Momin clarified that the BJP does not assure tickets to any individual and that all members are expected to contribute towards strengthening the organisation.
He also indicated that more political leaders may join the BJP in the coming months, stating that the party remains open to welcoming new members.
Rapsang, a former Congress MLA, had resigned from the party before the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections and contested from West Shillong on a National People’s Party (NPP) ticket. He was defeated by UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh.
