SHILLONG, JUN 23: Meghalaya is set to begin issuing state-level licences for two-wheeler taxi operators within the next 10 to 14 days, Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced on Tuesday.
Dhar said the Transport Department will hold a meeting next week to finalise the licensing process before opening applications for eligible operators.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, both individual operators and aggregators will be eligible to receive licences, provided all required documents are submitted and verified.
“I will be having a meeting next week, so after ten days or two weeks, we will issue licences to those interested, whether individuals or aggregators, if their documents are in order. The licence will be issued by the state,” Dhar said.
At the same time, the government has intensified its drive against illegal bike taxi services operating without valid licences.
Dhar said transport officials have been directed to strengthen enforcement efforts across the state and take action against operators found violating regulations.
“I have instructed my officers to strengthen field enforcement and take action against those operating illegally on the roads,” he said.
The minister added that the department is currently compiling relevant data and will release details on the number of licences issued once the new system becomes fully operational.
He said the government remains committed to regulating the sector while ensuring that eligible operators can legally provide services under the new licensing framework.
